Recycling single-use plant trays important for sustainability10 October 2017
It is the production of the plastic for single-use plant trays and their disposal that have the greatest impact. To obtain a clearer insight into the process, we investigated the recycling in detail.
Result of life cycle analysis (LCA) for single- and multi-use plant trays (Normpack 306 and Floratino 746) based on various impact categories.
50% recycling of single-use plant trays in the Netherlands and Germany
The research consisted of a detailed inventory of the use of both recycled raw materials and the collected trays. It revealed that 50% of the single-use plant trays in the Netherlands and Germany are recycled after use. We ascertained in the LCA that 90% of the single-use plant trays is made from recycled material (like old plant trays). Recycled plant trays can be directly used to create new plant trays.
Recycling important for sustainability
According to the results of the LCA, increasing the recycling percentage of single-use plant trays has an evident positive effect on sustainability. The multi-use trays continue to be more sustainable even with very high recycling percentages.
Opportunities to improve environmental performance
The research found at least two ways to improve the environmental performance:
1. Reduction in material: Normpack
Last spring a study was launched to investigate how to reduce the material used in the Normpack 200 and 400 series. We examined whether implementing another construction design (the bridge as in the Normpack 300 series) in these series would lead to a reduction in material while retaining the functionality.
2. Realisation of higher recycling
With our chain partners we are actively searching for possibilities to increase the recycling percentage.
Together with our chain partners, we are going to work with the above-mentioned results. In the industry sustainability plan 2018 - 2022, we are translating the outcomes into concrete actions and aims to make the use of packaging as efficient and sustainable as possible.
