'Sagrada Familia' of the Netherlands
"Now that the layers of dust have been removed from the Haarlem Sint Bavo cathedral, we see a revelation: The Netherlands has its own "Sagrada Familia", was the recent headline in the newspaper De Volkskrant. The completed restoration work in the interior has returned the unusual architecture and art treasures of the second largest church in the Netherlands to their full glory. The literal pinnacle is the lovely dome, the component that defines the Haarlem skyline. The cathedral is definitely high on the list of monuments to visit in the Netherlands.
Ode to Jos Cuypers
The architect Jos Cuypers (1861-‐1949) incorporated many flower motifs in the cathedral during its construction, which stretched from 1895 to 1930. Against the background of this flower-adorned architecture, the beauty of flowers offers inspiration and special images according to Royal FloraHolland. And at the same time that the largest indoor flower spectacle is taking place, the Haarlem flower parade is also being held. The prominent Dutch artist Jan Dibbets was inspired by the master builder Jos Cuypers when designing the new stained glass windows for the Haarlem basilica.
