Dutch floral greeting for visitors of the Ghent Floralies20 April 2016
From April 22 through May 1, 2016, the Ghent Floralies flower and plant exhibition takes place. During this event, the Citadelpoort (Willemspoort) gate will be decorated with 15,000 Gerberas and 1,000 Kalanchoës. This floral greeting is an initiative of the Embassy of the Netherlands in Belgium to emphasise the good relations with the host country Belgium.
The Netherlands says it with flowers
The Dutch Embassy is making a stunning contribution to the Ghent Floralies and the 250,000 visitors expected to attend the event. Both sides of the Citadelpoort will be decorated in flowers so the visitors can enjoy the splendid view twice. The Dutch Ambassador, Ms. Maryem van den Heuvel, will be 'opening' the gate in the presence of Ms. Joke Schauvliege, Minister of Agriculture of the Flemish government, Mr. Vermaerke, chair of the board of Ghent Floralies, and Mr. Jan Bocken, honorary Consul General. This will be followed by a networking reception organised by the Embassy to promote the trade links between the Netherlands and Belgium.
This is the first time that the exhibition is taking place outside. At four locations spread throughout the city, the highlights are presented, linked by a signposted walking route. The Willemspoort is a real eyecatcher along this route. It was decided to decorate this gate in particular with flowers because it is the remnant of the citadel constructed by King Willem I between 1822 and 1830. This project highlights the common past of Belgium and the Netherlands.
Installation by the Wunderkammer
Right next to the gate, a steel construction will arise on both sides in which 15,000 Gerberas and 1,000 Kalanchoës have been incorporated. The decorative arrangement of this art creation composed of flowers and plants is the work of a well-known arrangers duo. Florian Seyd and Ueli Signer of "the Wunderkammer" are responsible for the implementation, and they will give a demonstration with flowers and plants on April 25.
The exhibition taking place in the Belgian city is a dynamic and interactive spectacle for young and old. You'll encounter fascinating gardens of inspiration, breath-taking flower creations, floral workshops and the latest trends. The loveliest creations by top national and international florists, horticulturalists, landscape architects and artists can be admired at the following locations: the Bijloke, the Leopoldskazerne, the Sint-Pietersplein and the Citadelpark.
This event is being realised with the support of the Dutch Embassy in Brussels, BureauSierteelt.nl, ColouredbyGerbera, the Kalanchoë group FPC, the Association of Wholesalers in Flower Nursery Products (Vereniging van Groothandelaren in Bloemkwekerijproducten; VGB), "Comité Willem Bedankt", the Algemeen Nederlands Verbond Oost- en Zeeuws -Vlaanderen and the Agora group.
