Geranium: Balcony Plant of the Year 201624 March 2016
Geranium has been chosen by a media jury as Balcony Plant of the Year in 2016. That's a great reason for geranium growers to draw extra attention to this plant throughout the chain.
The Balcony Plant of the Year competition is supported by Royal FloraHolland and Flower Council Holland.
Retro and suitable for everyone
During a tour of flower-filled locations in Amsterdam, a Dutch media jury with members from Home and Garden, Margriet, Elle Decoration, de Telegraaf, Seasons, Groei & Bloei, Libelle and Eigen Huis & Tuin chose the Balcony Plant of the Year 2016.
"The geranium is entirely retro and a rewarding summer-flowering plant that is suitable for everyone, whether you have a green thumb or not," according to the jury. The jury members also praised the versatility of this annual. With its variety of shapes, colours and scents, the geranium does just fine in balcony boxes, pots and hanging baskets.
The best-known plant
Geraniums are possibly the best-known plant. In gardens, it is a beauty with lovely green leaves and stunning flowers. The range of leaves, colours and flower shapes is enormous. Geranium is a strong plant that brings pleasure for three seasons, from March until late in the autumn. This makes geraniums a winner in pots, containers and hanging baskets. Arranged together, they provide a magnificent and variegated wealth of flowers, but geranium is also a great team player in mixed company. Did you know that the scent of geranium is a popular ingredient in herbal perfumes?
Starting in April 2016 a media campaign will draw the European consumers' attention to geraniums and other garden plants. For more information about this Outdoor Campaign of Flower Council Holland, please contact the campaign manager, Ivo van Orden: T+31-(0)174-727015, E: i.van.orden@Flower Councilholland.nl.
In week 14 a Geranium Bus on Tour will visit Royal FloraHolland buyers, garden centres, shopping malls and weekly markets.
Rob's Grote Tuinverbouwing [a Dutch TV gardening programme] on Saturday, April 9 (week 14), will be devoted to geraniums. Rob will demonstrate how easy and fun it can be to bring a summer feeling to balconies and terraces by using plants.
These activities are financed by the geranium growers of Royal FloraHolland.
Banners, posters and flyers have been created for use in the chain and on the shopfloor. The flyers are available in Dutch, English and German. Would you like to have these POS materials? You can request digital copies from Teun van Turenhout at Royal FloraHolland.
