Pilot TomorrowPlant concluded this week12 March 2020
With TomorrowPlant, the product that is being auctioned is still at the nursery. The buyer is guaranteed to receive the product the next day, directly from the nursery. At the end of 2019, we started a pilot TomorrowPlant and this has now given us enough insights. That is why the pilot has been cancelled as of 10 March 2020.
With TomorrowPlant, customers are given access to an exclusive assortment of products that have never been supplied to the clock before, and there are no risks for growers.
Royal FloraHolland started this pilot because buyers want a broader assortment. Previously, growers never or rarely delivered these products via the clock, because there was a chance that the (desired) price would not be reached. The arrival of TomorrowPlant changed that. Growers set a bidding price, and products are not sold below that price. Growers don't have to supply unsold products due to the Buy-Today-Receive-Tomorrow principle.
Starting from 28 January, a separate auction group was added every Tuesday at clock 14 in Aalsmeer. No less than 9 members participated in the pilot. The first results show that the pricing stayed in line with market prices, although only 24% of the supply was sold. The revenue was variable and the 'Buy-Today-Receive-Tomorrow' principle wasn't always appreciated. Even though the results varied, the initiative was welcomed with open arms by both growers and customers.
One cactus grower thinks its unfortunate that the pilot is already cancelled. "Everything was satisfactory, even though sales have been dropping in the last few weeks. I hope there will be a follow-up."
A buyer remarked: "Every Monday evening we draw the attention of our customers to TomorrowPlant. The response has been underwhelming, but since the expansion in the lower price range, we have been receiving some more feedback. Continue this initiative and broaden the assortment!"
A further evaluation of the pilot will soon follow. The results will be included in the rollout of Nationwide Auctioning.
