Blog Thijs van der Valk: "We want to contribute to our customers successes"
Thijs van der Valk began working at OK Plant, a nursery that produces Little Kolibri Orchids and seasonal products, in 2001. It was a vacation job, but the then 13-year old Thijs loved it so much that he stayed. He first worked in De Lier but transferred to Naaldwijk later on. Today, he's a partner in the business and responsible for sales.
He has a lot of contact with customers. "It's challenging, inspiring our customers with our products, but I find developing new ideas together with customers energizing, especially when that stimulates their sales." Thijs was always interested in horticulture, so it's not so strange that he stayed with OK Plant. "I've worked here for 15 years now, so I know how to cater to the needs of the customer. I know what the options are."
"We are always working to create demand. For instance, our packaging carries personal messages from our staff. By providing information about their origins, we hope to get consumers interested in our products. We also interact with consumers via our Facebook page, such as by uploading attractive photos and providing care tips. We also have a tool that helps consumers find the closest florist that sells our products. In this way, we contribute to our customers' successes."
OK Plant began its new construction project in June 2016. "We'd literally grown too big. There's going to be a large presentation room where we can show customers our comprehensive concepts, which feature our unique lines of ceramic and baskets. We are hoping to inspire and surprise them. We find our inspiration at trend shows, in lifestyle magazines and at home expos where we see which accessories are in vogue. With this knowledge, and of course our taste and experience, we have our ceramic and baskets lines developed. Our customers appreciate that we work to accommodate trends by choosing colors and shapes that are 'in.' We feel that this is important, because trends are a deciding factor in sales, and therefore our customers' successes."
Thijs still loves coming into work every day. "I'm in daily contact with satisfied customers. They sometimes jump from one surprise to the next when they see all the possibilities offered by our range. It's cool. Our team is small and close. Everyone has their own responsibilities and is equally as important as the rest. We keep each other alert in order to provide our customers with the best possible service."
